Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME)

The Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) was launched in 1995 aboard the ESA ERS-2 polar platform. The objectives of this nadir-looking hyper-spectral UV-visible spectrometer cover a wide range of scientific fields, spanning from stratospheric ozone and climate change studies to atmospheric pollution monitoring.

The broad spectral range (240-790 nm) covered by its four medium-resolution spectrometers (0.2-0.4 nm) enables the measurement of key geophysical quantities such as ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), bromine monoxide (BrO), chlorine dioxide (OClO), sulphur dioxide (SO2), formaldehyde (HCHO), clouds, surface reflectivity, and aerosols. Its nadir-looking geometry makes it particularly suited for vertical column and tropospheric observations. Its polar orbit associated with a swath width of 960 km across track yield global coverage in less than three days.

GOME is the successful predecessor of a series of new generation sensors like SCIAMACHY aboard ESA's ENVISAT (operating since 2002), OMI aboard NASA's EOS-Aura, and GOME-2 aboard the EUMETSAT METOP series of meteorological satellites. Among major achievements, GOME demonstrated the feasibility of tropospheric trace species observations from space. It is also the first satellite providing global, continuous measurement of NO2, BrO, HCHO and SO2. GOME, followed recently by SCIAMACHY, have started a unique long-term ozone data record extending those initiated in the late 70s by TOMS/SBUV missions.

GOME Research at BIRA-IASB

For nearly two decades, the Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy BIRA-IASB has developed expertise in UV-visible remote sensing of atmospheric composition from the ground and from space. BIRA-IASB has developed its own spectral analysis algorithms for the retrieval of geophysical data from GOME radiometric measurements. It has also been involved in the development, the geophysical validation and the exploitation of GOME data generated by international collaborators.
